They are generally found at high elevations, with some species living above the tree line.  Despite their small size, pikas are important members of their ecosystems. 

They help to control vegetation growth and are a food source for predators such as eagles, hawks, and foxes. Additionally, pikas are an important indicator species, meaning that changes in their populations can indicate changes in the health of their ecosystems.  Unfortunately, many species of pikas are facing threats in the wild. 

Habitat destruction, climate change, and human disturbance are all contributing to declines in pika populations. Some species, like the Ili pika, are considered endangered and need conservation efforts. 

 Overall, the pika is a fascinating and unique animal that is well-adapted to life in high-altitude environments. Its vocalizations, food storage abilities, and important ecological role make it an important and valuable member of many ecosystems. 

However, urgent action is needed to protect these vulnerable species and ensure their survival for future generations.
